LOVE BANDS AT THE QUIET NIGHT INN TONIGHT!

26 May

QNINN1

Two beautiful bands, Love La Femme and The Skipping Forecast will be playing at CdA this coming Friday. There will be some food, bring your own drinks, £5 on the door.

Love La Femme is the result of the powerful attraction of great musical affinity and artistic collaboration between Marión Sosa and Pablo Valero from Mexico City.

The pair bring together a fusion of their individual musical influences. Marion is rooted musically in the colours of folk and classic rock while Pablo has his roots in dark psychedelic rock.

Pablo Valero is a guitarist and founding member of the emblematic mexican rock band Santa Sabina. He is also a successful producer and musical composer for film. In 2009 he met visual artist Marión, while they were both collaborating with the rock band Sanchez Dub. Over the course of a 3 year collaboration they formed what has eventually become Love La Femme.

The Skipping Forecast are an experimental pop duo who blend guitar, vocals and percussive electronics into harmonised dreamlike songscapes.

Originally formed in Sheffield, within The Audacious Art Experiment collective, Sophia Pettit (Guitar/Vocals) and Luke Twyman (Percussion, Tones, Vocals) first began playing and writing acoustic folk songs together as a side project to main bands at the time. After a summer of playing unplugged around the USA at backyard and livingroom shows, the pair sought to develop their songs into a larger, more electronic sound for the dark and atmospheric domains.

Utilising Twyman’s current range of improvised analogue instruments (dictaphones, walkie talkies, synths, pedals) and Pettit’s shimmering guitar, The Skipping Forecast have evolved into a more abstract and haunting soundtrack to their gritty, picture book storytelling.

SKETCHES OF MEXICO CONCERT & WORKSHOPS

7 May

Album cover designed by Malcolm Llanas Citrico Grafico

CdA welcomes back virtuoso Mexican guitarist Morgan Szymanski this month with his groundbreaking new show ‘Sketches of Mexico‘.  This unique  project curated by Szymanski and Sarabande Records is a collaboration with visual artists from Mexico, Portugal the UK and China. Through the marriage of both sonic and visual mediums, we are transported on a magical, multi sensory journey through Mexico’s sounds, colours, dances and styles.

The project focuses on the 20 Sketches of Mexico by guitarist and composer Julio César Oliva (1947-).  One of Mexico’s most famous classical guitarists, Oliva has composed over 300 works, bought a full program of Bach’s music to Mexico and is also an arranger, advocate and conservationist of traditional Mexican music. Oliva’s works are complemented by six songs by Manuel María Ponce (1882-1949), Mexico’s foremost composer and father of Mexican nationalism. Throughout his life he collected melodies and themes which are present in his compositions. The selection of popular pieces and songs reflect Ponce’s unending devotion to the guitar and his close relationship with Andres Segovia.

“I always wanted to record a CD of Mexican music. I found, completely by accident, the sheet music for the sketches years back in a music shop in Amsterdam as I was looking for Bach’s lute suites. They remained in a box for ages until I found them again one day and started playing them.”

Listen: Estrellita

Originally, Oliva’s Sketches of Mexico were never intended as concert works, but rather as a stylistic and didactic collection for young guitarists to become acquainted with traditional Mexican rhythms and musical forms. The characteristic simplicity of the work romantically conjures up vivid impressions, images, ambiences, sounds and colours of Mexico’s distinct and varied geography which is portrayed in a mixture of pre-hispanic, popular and modern sound worlds, taking the listener on a musical voyage through famous locations such as Acapulco, Oaxaca, Yucatán, Chiapas, Veracruz. Imagery is present in the music in homage to the Virgin of Guadalupe, the two famous volcanoes – Popocatépetl and Ixtaccíhuatl – the pyramids of Teotihuacan and the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, now embraced by the sprawling capital, Mexico City.

“They are not intended as concert works, but that simplicity is still appealing, relaxing and conjures up all sort of images.” Surprisingly, the works had never been recorded. “I had always loved Olivas work, but his music is only known in Mexico so I thought it was a good opportunity to promote him. I decided to record them as no one else had done so and it would be the world premiere recording.”

The eureka moment which gave birth to the idea of uniting art and music came to Morgan whilst jogging in the Peak District.  Why not commission artists to paint images inspired by these beautifully evocative pieces of music? “I really liked the idea of doing exhibitions-concerts”.

“I love painting and had the idea of doing some sketches for the CD cover but they were awful.”  So Morgan approached artist and friend Alvaro Verduzco along with Andres Almeida and Fernanda Gavito to take part in this unique collaboration.  They were asked to provide their own interpretation inspired by the music in the form of sketches, paintings and designs which accompany the music and everyone was interested. “My agent suggested Sally McKay. I had some sketches by Jane Williams so invited her too and she invited Catherine Hope Jones. By then we had a great group of artists so I decided to invite my friends Ben Crawford (UK),  Elisa Lima (Portugal), Peter Crann (Ireland) and Martin Barnes in Beijing.

“And that’s how we ended up with twenty artists, one for each sketch but some produced more than one. Oliva’s work really gets the imagination going and I suppose that is what the artists found appealing.”

The show is further enhanced by artist Joseph Fairweather-Hole who cleverly manages the projections of the images, animating them and bringing them to life with the music.

The following day, Morgan will be conducting workshops for children based on this same principle.  Children are invited to bring musical instruments and arts materials and together with Oliva’s Sketches and the projections of the especially commissioned art works,  Morgan will guide them on an immersive, educational creative and sensory journey through Mexico’s sights, sounds, colours and cultures.

PHOTOGRAPHER CARLOTTA LUKE PRESENTS THE PHOENIX PROJECT 7:30PM THIS FRIDAY

1 May

phoenix-13-04-08-121-1

This Friday Café des Artistes is very proud to be hosting a show and tell by photographer Carlotta Luke about her stills documentary on the Phoenix Industrial Estate in Lewes.

This event is the second in a new monthly meet up organised by Lewes Arts which is a really fresh and much hankered after online resource about Art and Artists in Lewes. Once a month there’s a get together at a different venue, where artists discuss their work.

Carlotta’s project is particularly close to our hearts here on the Phoenix Estate which is a real hotbed of artistic creativity.

The old buildings no longer fit for their original purpose have been taken over by artists who have given them a new lease of life, positively and authentically transforming them into places which provide space and facilities for local community and artists. They now house a diverse range of creatives represented by our friends at ZU Studios, print makers Another Fine Mesh, youth music project Starfish, the Foundry Gallery,Pop Up Studios and Community Chef amongst others. Collectively they provide a treasure chest of fabulous imagery and feast of visuals which must be a pleasure for a photographer to explore.

It is always interesting to hear artists present their work and Carlotta is particularly captivating with her soft lilting Bostonian accent, I am sure she will be very compelling as she describes her project’s journey and her perceptions of the estate through her camera.

Carlotta specialises in this kind of project, amongst her many talents she has an MA in urban design which gives her an understanding about architecture and the way in which people cultivate spaces and the way in which space in turn shapes and cultivates us.  Among her other work are projects on children and children’s rights, local food and producers, the renovation of an Elizabethan Manor House in Glynde and the Whitechapel Bell Foundry which documents a “disappearing age”.

In the wake of a possible new re-development, this arts community landscape is threatened by the fate that so many grass roots developments face. Soon to be erased by clean lines and faceless grey structures this project may be all that is left of this very special arts community and we thank Carlotta for capturing it.

This talk is a chance for the Phoenix community to come together and celebrate through Carlotta’s lens what they have built with love, joy and dedication and an opportunity for those outside or unfamiliar with the place to gain a beautiful insight into the plethora of artistic activities which happen here.

CdA is really looking forward to welcoming you inside the doors. The presentation will happen upstairs in our cyclorama.

Starting at 7.30pm.

All welcome.

Hello beloved bloggers. If you are still wondering what to do with your Saturday night we can promise that a very enjoyable evening is in store for you at Café des Artistes this weekend. Not only will our wonderful Mexican performance artist Gabby Muñoz be appearing at CdA, now we can confirm that the fantastic gypsy jazz guitar duo “Ultraswing” will also be in situ to fill our hearts with some Djanjo Reinhardt style six fingered riffs before and after Gabby’s show.

Gabby’s performance follows the story of Greta, a girl wishing, waiting and hoping to meet Mr Right. It is a beautiful performance piece which tugs at the heart strings and makes your belly ache with laughter, we can guarantee there will be tears in your eyes of some nature before the evening is over! Perhaps, perhaps…quizas has met with rave reviews all over the world including, New York, Mexico, Sweden, London and now Lewes.

There are more really great events in the CdA diary including the fantastic classical guitarist Morgan Szymanski 25th + 26th May and a really edgy midsummer’s gig in June; think cinematic, psychedelic, haunting sitars and enchanting fairytales….I will update you soon with more details but do follow us on Twitter (@CDALewes) and like our Facebook page Café des Artistes Lewes for more updates.

Really looking forward to seeing you there, it’s been a while since we put on an event and we are very excited about it.
