Perhaps, perhaps…Quizas

We have some very special dates in the CdA calendar this year, the first event on Saturday 20th April is a unique solo clown piece written and performed by Mexican artist Gabby Muñoz
Before coming to Lewes and other venues in London and the UK this year, Gabby has toured her one woman show “Perhaps, Perhaps…Quizas” at festivals in New York, Madrid, Sweden, Colombia as well as her home country Mexico. The show has been selected for the 7th Scenic Arts exhibition in Mexico and has been named as a must see show by NY TimeOut.
The show follows the story of Greta, a girl wishing and waiting for the right man. With her master performance and spectacular visual treatment, Muñoz creates an authentic connection with her audience and we are directly transported into Greta’s cobwebbed universe of Havisham bridal gowns and Cinderalla fantasies as she prepares for the arrival of “the one”.
The production is carefully constructed with perfect measures of pathos and humour, it is at once beautifully poignant as it is hilarious and we are kept on the edge of our seats as Greta oscillates between the thresholds of her reality and imagination.
Will Greta get lucky tonight?   Perhaps, perhaps, Quizas…

URGENT – PLEASE HELP US TO SAVE THE PHOENIX

5 Dec

Dear CdA friends.

We have a very special request to ask you.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

PLESE SIGN OUR PETITIONhttp://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/save-the-phoenix-lewes TO SAVE THE PHOENIX ESTATE

Rising from the ashes of a semi derelict site founded at the height of the the Industrial Era is a grass roots development made up from an impressive collection of art studios, galleries and community centres.

Represented by Café des Artistes, Zu Studios, Another Fine Mesh, Pop Up Studios, The Foundry Gallery, The Phoenix Theatre, Starfish, Community Chef and recently Skatehouse a social enterprise scheme for skateboarders and young people.

This blossoming arts quarter in Lewes East Sussex is a remarkable example of human endeavour and creativity and also a continuation of a rich artistic, visionary and independently spirited culture which finds its’ roots in the great historical figures, artists and writers associated with the heritage of Lewes; Sir Thomas Paine, Bloomsbury and Glyndebourne.

The Phoenix symbolises the independence of our community which allows people to create spaces which adapt to their needs. Thus the area has become what enrichies the culture of Lewes and brings artistic expression to the town. Everyone is welcome to participate.

But now this fertile hotbed of creativity, this unique manifestation of community spirit and artistic expression is under threat. Recently it was purchased for relatively little money by a large development corporation and the council is about to pass a “core strategy” which will radically redefine the future of Lewes building development for twenty years and will include the biggest development site in Lewes:14 acres of the Phoenix Estate opposite Tescos.

There is also a procession starting outside Zu Studios at 1.30pm on Wednesday 5th December.
We will be heading to Pelham House to present a petition and make a right song and dance! Bring instruments and be colourful!

The Phoenix Estate is a unique and valuable part of Sussex culture. It is ripe with amazing possibilities, and given the chance could evolve into a fully integrated, urban eco/cultural centre. Lewes is already a beacon of independence & imagination. We wish to celebrate this culture.
With special thanks to Samira and Martin founders of Zu Studios for all their remarkable efforts, energy and dynamic proactivity in putting this petition together, marshalling an army of support and spreading the word via all possible avenues.

Yours gratefully,

Christian Thompson and Katey Rowland
