This event is the second in a new monthly meet up organised by Lewes Arts which is a really fresh and much hankered after online resource about Art and Artists in Lewes. Once a month there’s a get together at a different venue, where artists discuss their work.
Carlotta’s project is particularly close to our hearts here on the Phoenix Estate which is a real hotbed of artistic creativity.
The old buildings no longer fit for their original purpose have been taken over by artists who have given them a new lease of life, positively and authentically transforming them into places which provide space and facilities for local community and artists. They now house a diverse range of creatives represented by our friends at ZU Studios, print makers Another Fine Mesh, youth music project Starfish, the Foundry Gallery,Pop Up Studios and Community Chef amongst others. Collectively they provide a treasure chest of fabulous imagery and feast of visuals which must be a pleasure for a photographer to explore.
It is always interesting to hear artists present their work and Carlotta is particularly captivating with her soft lilting Bostonian accent, I am sure she will be very compelling as she describes her project’s journey and her perceptions of the estate through her camera.
Carlotta specialises in this kind of project, amongst her many talents she has an MA in urban design which gives her an understanding about architecture and the way in which people cultivate spaces and the way in which space in turn shapes and cultivates us. Among her other work are projects on children and children’s rights, local food and producers, the renovation of an Elizabethan Manor House in Glynde and the Whitechapel Bell Foundry which documents a “disappearing age”.
In the wake of a possible new re-development, this arts community landscape is threatened by the fate that so many grass roots developments face. Soon to be erased by clean lines and faceless grey structures this project may be all that is left of this very special arts community and we thank Carlotta for capturing it.
This talk is a chance for the Phoenix community to come together and celebrate through Carlotta’s lens what they have built with love, joy and dedication and an opportunity for those outside or unfamiliar with the place to gain a beautiful insight into the plethora of artistic activities which happen here.
CdA is really looking forward to welcoming you inside the doors. The presentation will happen upstairs in our cyclorama.
